A Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is primarily diagnosed through an Ultrasound or Doppler examination of the extremity. This non-invasive imaging technique uses sound waves to create pictures of the blood flow in the veins, allowing for the detection of clots. It is widely regarded as the gold standard in the diagnosis of DVT due to its high sensitivity and specificity.

The ultrasound can show whether there is any obstruction in the veins, which would indicate a clot. Furthermore, Doppler studies assess the flow of blood and can help identify abnormalities related to venous blood flow that are associated with DVT.

While other imaging methods like CT scans and MRIs can be used for vascular imaging, they are not typically the first-line approaches for diagnosing DVT due to their higher costs and greater complexity compared to ultrasound. X-rays are also not useful in diagnosing DVT, as they primarily visualize bones and may not show soft tissue or vascular structures effectively.
